Early Life and Challenges
Rafael Class II was born on September 15, 1987, at Lincoln Hospital in the Bronx. Raised by his mother between Patterson Projects in the Bronx and Washington Projects in Spanish Harlem, Rafael experienced firsthand the struggles of single parenthood and economic hardship. His mother's tireless efforts to provide for him instilled in Rafael a sense of resilience and determination.
Adolescence and Adversity
During his adolescence, Rafael moved to Fall River, Massachusetts, to live with his father. However, his father’s battles with drug addiction and instability presented new challenges. Without proper guidance, Rafael turned to the streets for direction and support, leading him back to New York City, where he faced further hardships and ultimately incarceration, serving a 3.5-year sentence in a New York State prison.
A Transformative Period
Rafael's time in prison became a pivotal period in his life. Through the generosity of Nyack College, he obtained a Bachelor of Science in Organizational Management while incarcerated. This educational achievement marked a turning point, changing Rafael’s perspective on life and igniting his passion for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) and the art of empathy.
Academic and Professional Growth
Upon his release, Rafael’s academic journey continued. He earned an MBA in Strategic Leadership from the University of the Southwest in Hobbs, New Mexico, further solidifying his commitment to leadership and inclusive practices. Currently, Rafael is pursuing an EdD in Higher Education Administration with a focus on Organizational Leadership at Liberty University, entering the capstone phase in Fall 2024.

Rafael’s journey is a testament to the transformative power of education and empathy. From his challenging beginnings in the Bronx and Spanish Harlem to his academic and professional achievements, he embodies resilience and determination. His life experiences have fueled his dedication to DEIB, inspiring him to become a prime example of how strategic methods of inclusive diversification and the utilization of empathy can lead to equity and a true sense of belonging.
